Arowhenua Marae

reaching out to the community

The design for the Arowhenua Marae takes its inspiration from the waiata – “Te Hapa o Nui” – with the new wings reaching out to the community like outreached hands.
The redevelopment retains the existing Wharenui (Meeting House) as the anchor to the complex. The new wings that extend both sides of the Wharenui.
The eastern wing this contains houses the Kaumatua Ruma (Elders Lounge),  Wharepaku (Ablutions) and Toa Moenga (Storage). The western wing is the Whare Kai (Dining Hall) and covered outside terrace.

Behind the Wharenui is the Inside and outside Kihini (Kitchens). These are formed in a gabled building mirroring the Wharenui.
